From Fierce Homeland Security:
| By Zach Rausnitz |
The Homeland Security Department is working on technology that will connect various kinds of data the government has about foreign visitors in order to better identify and reduce visa overstays, John Cohen, DHS's deputy counter-terrorism coordinator, told the House Homeland Security subcommittee on border and maritime security March 6.A better exit program can reduce the backlog of unreviewed overstays and let DHS take action on high-risk overstays, he said. Cohen testified that a technology that gathers overstay information by automating connections between data sources should come online this summer. For the subsequent phase of this initiative, DHS intends to increase functionality between biometric and biographic data repositories, he said. In addition, Cohen defended the Obama administration's proposed transfer of US-VISIT to two DHS component agencies, Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. |
