Confessed soldier-killer Abdulhakim Muhammad’s death-penalty trial was pushed back five months on Tuesday, a last-minute delay resulting from a closed meeting involving the judge, defense attorneys and prosecutors a month ago.

A week before the trial’s scheduled Feb. 23 start, Pulaski County Circuit Judge Herb Wright agreed to a defense request to delay it for the third time.

On Tuesday, Wright told prosecutors and defense attorneys that there will be no more delays.

“I’ve made my position clear,” he said. “This case will be tried on that [July 18] date.”

Defense attorney Patrick Benca agreed to waive speedy-trial concerns from the latest continuance. He declined to speak with reporters after the hearing.
