The terrorist who burrowed in

A British native of Bangladesh and a British Airways computer expert has been convicted of plotting to launch a 9/11 style attack on US bound planes originating in the United Kingdom. He was convicted in a British Court of four counts including: plotting to blow up an airplane; gaining a UK job in order to exploit terrorist attacks; conspiring with the radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and attempting to instigate financial and disruptive attacks on British Airways.

Rajib Karim was a disciple of Anwar al Awlaki, the American born cleric who has influenced and sponsored such recent terrorist figures as Major Nidal Hassan of the Fort Hood massacre and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the underwear bomber as well as the recent plot to place ink printer bombs on board freight planes bound for the US. Awlaki, now living in Yemen, has openly stated that he is determined to bring jihad and terror to American shores.

In February of last year in an encrypted email between al Awlaki and Karim, Awlaki wrote" Our highest priority is the US. Anything there, even on a smaller scale compared to what we may do in the UK would be our choice. So the question is with the people you have is it possible to get a package or a person on board a flight heading to the US?"

Mr. Karim, from a wealthy family in Bangladesh, was educated in England and subsequently returned to his native country. In 2006 he and his wife returned to the United Kingdom in order to medical treatment for their two year old son. Despite his associations with various radical groups in the U.K., he found work at British Airways as a software engineer.

As such he had access to vital BA information as well as personnel files for recruiting purposes. He was also planning to crash BA's sophisticated computer systems causing chaos and huge financial losses.

From the time he re-entered the UK, Karin had dedicated his life to the terrorism cause. In one email message he wrote: "From the moment I entered this country my nijah [purpose] was to do something for the deen [faith], it was not to make a living here and start enjoying life. I got the BA job against all odds and really felt it was help from Allah."

The prosecutor in the case, Jonathon Laidlaw QC, summed up the life and dedication of Mr. Karim:' "He was planning the sort of spectacular attack which all terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda aspire to- an attack of the sort which might result in the wholesale loss of life, consequent economic loss and, importantly from the terrorist perspective, widespread fear and uncertainty in the face of the renewed threat from Islamic extremist." He added: "The Defendant, as you will see from his own writings, was anxious himself to carry out such an act and he was determined to seek martyrdom, to die and to sacrifice himself to the cause."

This plot was found out in time; however, Anwar al-Awlaki, Hezb'allah, al Qaeda among others are determined to succeed in further terror attacks against the United States. It has been acknowledged that Hezb'allah is in Mexico and working with the drug cartels. With the porous border and the Obama administration's downplaying of terror threats, any or all of these groups may well accomplish their goals. One thing is for certain, as shown in the UK; they will never give up trying.
