LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – A terror suspect who made national news is getting ready to go to trial in Lubbock. On Wednesday, the attorney for Khalid Aldawsari, 20, filed a motion to see the prosecution's evidence.
It's called a motion for discovery and most of it is routine for any criminal case, but the motion specifically calls for the defense to have copies of Aldawsari's writing.
That might be interesting because the office of U.S. Attorney said in late February that Aldawsari had written notes to himself about possible targets for bomb attacks on nuclear power plants, hydro-dams, and the home for former President George W. Bush, to which he referred as the "Tyrant's House."
Aldawsari, a citizen of Saudi Arabia, also wrote about his anti-American feelings and his desire for jihad.
In March of 2010, prior to arriving in Lubbock as a college student, Aldawsari wrote in part in an Internet post, "grant me martyrdom for Your sake and make jihad easy for me." He further wrote, one month later, "It is war until… the infidels leave defeated."
Perhaps ironically, he also wrote that he liked being in Lubbock.
"Although the city is small, I have enjoyed it because everything is close to me such as shops, malls, theaters …," Aldawsari wrote on a blog on August 10th, 2009, which was one week after arriving in Lubbock.
"Texas Tech University is very nice one and I like it," he continued. "They have a good football team, so probably I will enjoy the city and the life here."
He was in Lubbock as a college student until he was arrested on February 23rd. Court records say Aldawsari had acquired the raw material needed for a chemical bomb.
When he wasn't writing about blowing up targets to defeat infidels, he was writing about his dreams to someday get hired on with Google.
"That dream is mainly and simply to be an employee in Google," Aldawsari wrote on May 11th, 2009. "I am preparing to make a device like Nintendo DSI but more sophisticated…"
"I think that device will get me into Google," he wrote. "Go Khalid."
The defense motion also calls upon prosecutors to reveal
- who if anyone might be an un-indicted co-conspirator,
- if Aldawsari has been convicted of, or accused of any crimes aside from his current criminal charge, and
- any evidence that prosecutors might want to use to influence his sentence if convicted.
