A British man accused of plotting a terror attack in Kenya will go on trial in the East African country in May, a court heard today. Muslim convert Jermaine Grant, 29, appeared before a magistrate this morning in the port city of Mombasa.
The court heard the matter would be adjourned to allow analysis by experts in Britain of a haul of explosives allegedly discovered in his possession.
Grant, from Newham in East London, was arrested alongside three other suspects in December during a police raid on a property in Mombasa.
The group, whom police claim could be linked to the terror organisation al-Shabaab, have been charged with possessing explosives and plotting to use them in an attack.
Today prosecutor Jacob Ondari told the court key evidence in the case was being subjected to forensic analysis in Britain.
Addressing the judge he said: "Your honour, the exhibits in this case are in the UK for forensic examination and therefore I'm not ready to proceed with the case."
Confirmation that analysis of the evidence was not complete resulted in the postponement of the trial, which had been expected to start today.
Instead magistrate Joyce Gandari told the court the matter would be heard during a two day hearing scheduled to start on May 9.
Grant has already been jailed for a year in Kenya after being convicted of entering the country illegally.
Wearing a black T-shirt, he appeared calm this morning as he stood in the dock at 10am for the short hearing.
