Should the US Get Involved In the Senkaku / Diaoyutai Islands Controversy?
from ROK Drop by GI Korea
This article was about the Chinese supposedly training to shoot down an American F-22, but what I found to be of the most interest is that the US is training with the Japanese SDF to defend the Senkaku Islands:
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army recently staged an intercept exercise targeting the U.S.’ latest stealth fighter jet, the F-22 Raptor, Hong Kong’s Apple Daily reported Thursday.
Japanese media on Oct. 3 reported that the Japanese and U.S. militaries will carry out a joint exercise to practice recapturing the disputed Senkaku or Diaoyutai Islands in November, in case the Chinese capture them in a surprise attack. It said the U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier George Washington and F-22 Raptors will take part in the exercise.
On Oct. 8, five days after the report, a Chinese Air Force brigade in the Chengdu military district practiced firing a Hong Qi No. 9 missile, China’s newest ground-to-air missile, to hit a target assumed to be an F-22, the Apple Daily said. [Chosun Ilbo]
The Senkaku Islands are known as the Diaoyutai Islands in China and were the subject of a major diplomatic dispute between the Chinese and the Japanese governments recently. From what I have read it seems the Chinese have little claim to the Diaoyutai Islands though I am not as well read on the subject as I am with the Dokdo Islets controversy between Korea and Japan. It seems the Chinese claims for the islands came simply because of the gas deposits around the islands as well as an attempt to promote Chinese nationalism within the public.
The larger issue though is if the US should be involved in this issue? If the Chinese did militarily occupy the Senkaku Islands is the US willing to go to war with China over it? It would seem that with the defense treaty with Japan the US would be obligated to and by participating in this exercise it appears that Washington is sending Beijing that signal.
