$19 Billion Later, the Pentagon Discovers Dogs are the Best Bomb Detectors

Since roadside bombs have become the weapon of choice by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is understandable that the military would want to develop a better bomb detector.

Six years and $19 billion later, the Pentagon has discovered that its new high-tech bomb detectors are not as good as the old one — the one with four legs, a wagging tail and long nose. Nothing could match a team of specialists paired with a dog at locating bombs.

The best that $19 billion in research could produce was a bomb detector with a 50% success rate at detecting IEDs. Man’s best friend had a success rate of 80%.

Nineteen billion would have bought a lot of Alpo.
