Terrorist bombings in Stockholm kill 1, injure 2

A car loaded with gas canisters detonated in a busy section of downtown Stockholm today, followed by another explosion 10 minutes later caused by a suicide bomber.
After the explosions, the bomber was found dead lying about 300 yards away from the car bomb, reportedly wearing a suicide vest and a backpack full of nails and surrounded by the remains of pipe bombs. The bombs apparently were inexpertly crafted and failed to detonate to full capacity. Two people were wounded in the bombings, which took place in a street filled with Christmas shoppers.
Only minutes before the attacks, the Swedish Security Police (SAPO) had received an email warning, with sound files in both Swedish and Arabic, referring to the presence of Swedish forces in Afghanistan and to the cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed by Swedish artist Lars Viks, Reuters reported.
"Our actions will speak for themselves, as long as you do not end your war against Islam and humiliation of the Prophet and your stupid support for the pig Viks," the speaker threatened on the tape, as reported by Swedish news agency TT.
The message threatened the Swedish state and its people, according to the BBC, saying the time had come for them to die "like our brothers and sisters." It also exhorted militant Muslims in Sweden and Europe to rise up against the West.
With recent months, the terror alert in Sweden has been raised to his highest level in five years, amid concerns about possible Mumbai-styled terror plots targeting European cities. In early October, the Swedish Security service said that "a handful" of Swedish citizens had traveled to Pakistan for training at terror camps. Later that month, it was reported that two of three men arrested in connection to a bomb threat in central Gothenburg remained in custody, while police were working closely with SAPO to forestall any possible plots.
Today's bombing bears some similarity to the failed Times Square bombing in New York City on May 1, 2010, in which a relatively small operation attempted a significant attack in a major metropolitan area. As in that case, apparently poor bomb-making skills prevented today's attack from causing extensive harm.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Two explosions killed a man and injured two other people in a busy shopping area in central Stockholm on Saturday, police said.
The Swedish news agency TT said it had received an email warning with a threat to Sweden and its people ahead of the explosions. It said the threat was linked to Sweden’s presence in Afghanistan, where it has a force of 500 soldiers, mainly in the north.
TT said the warning, which was also sent to Sweden’s Security Police (SAPO), was received 10 minutes before the blasts, and also referred to caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed by Swedish artist Lars Vilks.
The email had sound files in Swedish and Arabic.
“Our actions will speak for themselves, as long as you do not end your war against Islam and humiliation of the Prophet and your stupid support for the pig Vilks,” TT quoted a man as saying in one of the sound files.
Police spokeswoman Petra Sjolander said the first explosion had been in a car containing gas canisters. The dead man was found at the site of the second blast about 300 metres away.
It was not immediately clear precisely what caused the blasts and investigators and emergency services were at the scene. Witnesses said a bomb disposal robot was being used.
Media reported scenes of panic among teeming Christmas shoppers, with people fleeing amid smoke and the smell of explosives.

Roughly ten minutes before the explosions, Swedish news agency TT received an email telling Muslims in Sweden and Europe it was “time to take action”- The Local.
“Time for Swedish people to die like our brothers and sisters”,
said a threatening message ahead of the bombs.

Swedish media also reported a suicide bomber blew himsel up about 200 meters from the car. Apparently an e-mail had been received earlier threatening and attack and criticizing the role of Swedish soldiers in Afghanistan and urging Muslims to take action. The Swedish News Agency TT said that the e-mail was received just before the attack, which took place around 5 pm local time. The e-mail also referred to caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad by the Swedish artist Lars Vilks.
The e-mail had sound bytes and TT quoted a man on one of the sound bytes saying:
“Our actions will speak for themselves, as long as you do not end your war against Islam and humiliation of the Prophet and your stupid support for the pig Vilks,”
The bomber, who was wearing cannisters, according to some reports, shouted in Arabic before the blast.
