Iraqi: Jihadist murders two U.S. soldiers by smuggling real bullets into training exercise and opening fire
A training exercise for the nation's security forces. As I have said many times, there is no reliable way to distinguish a peaceful Muslim from a jihadist. This is the fruit of the unwillingness to make even a cursory attempt to take that fact into account.
"US soldiers killed while training Iraqis," by Lara Jakes for the Associated Press, January 15 (thanks to Joseph):
BAGHDAD - Two U.S. troops were killed Saturday by an Iraqi soldier who apparently smuggled real bullets into a training exercise and opened fire, raising fresh concerns about insurgents worming into the nation's security forces as the Americans prepare to leave by the year's end.
A U.S. military official said the shooter was immediately killed by American soldiers who were running the morning drill at a training center on a U.S. base in the northern city of Mosul. The U.S. official said the exercise was not meant to involve live ammunition, and an Iraqi army officer said the shooting appeared to have been planned.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information. A U.S. statement confirmed that two soldiers were killed and a third was wounded by small-arms fire by what the military described as "an individual wearing an Iraqi army uniform."
"This incident occurred during a training event being conducted by U.S. forces as part of their advise and assist mission with Iraqi security forces," the U.S. military said in a statement....

BAGHDAD (AP) — Two U.S. soldiers were killed by an Iraqi trooper who opened fire on them during a training exercise Saturday, raising fresh concerns about Iraq’s security forces as the Americans prepare to withdraw from the country by the end of this year.
Another soldier was killed Saturday during a military operation in central Iraq, making it one of the deadliest days for U.S. forces in the country in months.
In May 2009, two U.S. soldiers were killed and three were wounded in Mosul by a gunman wearing an Iraqi army uniform. Three months earlier, two Iraqi policemen opened fire on U.S. soldiers and Iraqi police who were lunching at a Mosul police station. The attack killed a U.S. soldier and his interpreter. (Source)

Iraq: 12 al-Qaeda-linked jihadists walk out of Basra prison dressed in police uniforms
"Of course, there was collusion from within the compound." "Iraq seeks militants after Basra jail breakout," from BBC News, January 14:
Twelve militants linked to al-Qaeda have broken out of a prison in Basra in southern Iraq, the authorities say.
The men were awaiting trial when they obtained police uniforms and walked out of the detention centre - in one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces - before dawn, security officials said.
They are said to have ties with the Islamic State of Iraq - a Sunni insurgent group affiliated to al-Qaeda.
All the prison guards have been arrested and a manhunt is under way.
"Of course, there was collusion from within the compound, but we do not know who is involved at the moment," said Ali Ghanim al-Maliki, head of the security committee at Basra's provincial council.
The 12 were the only detainees held at the detention centre - in a fortified compound which also houses the governor's office, the police headquarters and an intelligence cell.
Half of them had confessed to involvement in multiple bombings since 2004 in Basra and the southern cities of Amarah and Nasiriyah, an intelligence officer told the Associated Press news agency.
Their confessions led the authorities to the other six suspects, the officer said.
He added that the fugitives were believed to be heading to Baghdad to obtain fake IDs and passports to help them flee the country.
Car searches and identity checks have been stepped up, and checkpoints set up on two major northbound roads....Posted by Marisol on January 14, 2011 4:48 PM
